Penguin publishes Indian Edition of The Strike

The first foreign edition of The Strike is now available through Penguin Books India. Not only is this a wonderful coup for the book but also particularly satisfying as the story takes place in 1980s India and it is a sort of homecoming for this debut novel. Penguin has redesigned the book for the sub-continental market.

Anand wins a Canada-US Fulbright Award.

This past week, I found out that I have been awarded a Fulbright to spend the next year at Boston University studying under the National Book Award winning writer Ha Jin (Waiting, Crazed) and Leslie Esptein. I will also have the opportunity to teach a class in creative writing to Boston University undergraduates.

While I am sad about leaving Toronto, even if only for a year, I am also looking forward to returning to Boston after a break of nearly seven years.

Controversy over Outlook Article

Apparently I am not the only Anand Mahadevan in this world. Recently there was an article in the Indian magazine Outlook written by another Anand Mahadevan who described his conversion to Christianity and bemoaned prejudice in India. Without making any comments about the validity of his writing (I live in Canada and cannot speak for religious freedoms and choices in India), let me set the record straight on the one matter: I am not the author of this article. Please direct both thanks and vitriol (although this could be diluted) to the right Anand Mahadevan.

Award Winning Playwright to adapt The Strike for the stage.

R.L. Nesvet who has won several awards for her powerful plays is adapting The Strike for the stage. Currently titled Revolutions per minute, the stage adaptation distills the novel's images and ideas into a masterful plot that brings out the desires and conflicts of the main characters within the context of Indian film and modernity.

Nesvet is currently a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Glocestershire and has an MFA in playwriting from the Tisch School at NYU. She has won awards for her plays The Shape Shifter, The Offensive, Jesus and Jupiter. A prolific and critically acclaimed playwright, Nesvet's plays have been staged in Chicago (The Girl in the Iron Mask) , Washington D.C. (Troglodytes), New York (Galileo in the Underwrorld), Montreal (Jesus and Jupiter), and London (Piecemakers).

Anand is very excited to be working with R.L. Nesvet and to have such a celebrated playwright adapting his work. Stay posted for more news on this front.
